Jerry enjoyed a lot of celebrity in the later years but remember as Monte has pointed out the Dead were much maligned by the main stream in those early years.
Garcia was nicknamed Quasi Moto, now that is pretty harsh!
And the whole love it or leave it deal and unwashed hippie label.
So I always took the line;
"Wherever he goes the people all complained"
to refer to all Heads in general.
And I missed those early years but I clearly remember in the 1980's tour heads getting their vehicles searched for having mail on the dashboard or a small tiny crack in the windshield.
We got pulled over once and I asked if there was a problem.
The officer after a few probing questions was like- "would you mind if I search your vehicle."
I said. "NO". I live in this vehicle, get a search warrant.
They brought a dog in but he has a hard time sniffing from outside a vehicle.
Long story short got to next show- people in very similar V.W. bus allowed same cops to search vehicle. They ended up with a court date.
"Did it matter? Does it now?"
Stephen would answer
if he only knew how!

That lyric is: "Did it matter? Does it now?"
